A DIFFERENT STORY Listen, I’ll Tell You a Story…. …say just that. Say ‘Once upon a time…’ and those of us who were lucky enough to have stories read to us are back with out minds tucked into a comfortable place ready to have our imagination stirred or cosseted, taken to the land of anywhere. Story is not just for children though. Everyone enjoys a story and so storytelling events are for anyone and everyone. A storyteller does not read a story but tells it – weaving the thread of story through unfolding landscapes and taking the listener along with the flow. The stories may be of anything. They may relate to a particular event (eg Halloween), a place (eg a castle or garden). They may be traditional or written by well-known writers – or the storyteller her/himself. The story may last 5 minutes or an hour… Storytelling is practised more and more in the UK. Mostly it is practised for entertainment. For example, it may be part of a festival or music event or it may be used in schools, parties or at heritage sites (eg National Trust), in community events or at care homes and so on. It can have a more formal side too, sometimes storytelling is used as a method of exploring the cultures of organisations, or, for example, the realities in the lives of professional people like nurses. Jenny Moon is a storyteller, living in Lympstone, East Devon, and she is happy to fit storytelling or find stories to fit around your events.
