 WI

Jo Cotton (President) opened the meeting by thanking the members who had helped at the recent Spring Group meeting.  Tony Beard, from Radio Devon, had proved a most popular speaker and letters from other Institutes within the Group confirmed that it had been a very happy and successful afternoon.

There is only one Resolution to go forward to the National AGM next month and that is "SOS for honey bees”.  Honey bees play a vital role in the pollination of food crops and in our environment.  In view of the concerns about the accelerating decline in the UK honey bee population, this meeting urges HM Government to increase funding for research into bee health.  There has been much information in the media recently about the bees' plight and in WI Life, which helped us to agree unanimously that we should support this Resolution.

Our own Drama Group then entertained us with "The Night Mail" by W H Auden and Mollie Slate gave a comprehensive, and at times funny, report on the recent Spring Council meeting.

Gloria McCarthy (Treasurer) ran through our finances and gave us ample notice of the need for a new Treasurer later this year.  Diana Budgen (Social Secretary) announced a number of interesting trips.  The next main social event is our 90th birthday supper on Weds. 15 July when the dress code is "Ascot Style".

A Committee meeting will take place at Rose Cottage on Weds. 27th May at 2.15 pm. and at our WI meeting on 3 June (2.30 pm at Village Hall) Mr Bernard Lockett will give us "An appreciation of Gilbert & Sullivan".

DO SOMETHING TASTY   HOSPISCARE WEEK, 6 – 13 JUNE

We’d love it if you could hold an afternoon Tea at Three and help make a difference for people in Devon.  It’s easy – bake (or buy!) a cake and make tea for your friends and family and charge them a few pounds to enjoy. Whether you raise £10 or £200 every penny will be helping us to support people in Devon with a terminal illness.

Contact Tracey Skinner for a fundraising pack on 01392 688052, t.skinner@hospiscare.co.uk

LYMPSTONE PLAYERS PRODUCTION OF J. B. PRIESTLEY’S ‘WHEN WE ARE MARRIED’ APRIL 2009

How can a village of just eighteen hundred souls produce such a professional production?

At the opening, striking visual clues of costumes, set, posturing and body language quickly coalesced with the scintillating ensemble acting and convincing northern accents – drawing us, laughing and wondering - into Yorkshire circa 1908.

This satirical comedy was about jumped-up mill bosses holding court over lesser mortals (& wives) – until the unmasking began.  Were they truly married?  Mary Blair’s poised return to directing set the production alight – coaxing and polishing until it peaked in the three performances.

Every player caught the heart of their character – delighting in bouncing off each other.  The crafty mill bosses, played by Harland Walshaw, Clive Wilson & Tony Gray fooled us into thinking that ordered injustice would prevail – until they were shoved headlong into ridicule by a Chapel organist, played by a cool Tim Jupp.  Two of their wives, persuasively played by Shirley Wilkes & Bobby Brunt, made us cringe for the acquiescent stricture of those times – while who would want the tongue-lashing meted out by a convincing Grace Packman. Mary Truell’s outrageous acerbic performance as cook went hand-in-hand with Jenny Gray’s cleverly belligerent maid.  And would drunken photographer, Ben Redding, fall over?  We wondered.  Heather Redding’s brassy portrayal of the lover could easily have adorned Corry.  Players with shorter parts excelled – Barrie Bissett as the confused reporter, Lucy McCance as the uncomfortable daughter and Paul Hickson’s pompous vicar.  And behind the scenes the army of volunteers lifted everything up.

Dogged commitment and camaraderie?  … or something in Lympstone’s water?
