 A FAREWELL FOR ROMANIA

Since 1992, Lympstone’s Audrey Doidge has made about 15 visits to our adopted village Barcanesti, Romania, to distribute aid purchased with generous donations from the people of Lympstone, friends and the Church. Her last trip was in 2005 as health reasons prevented her from returning until now.

Audrey says “ I feel called by God to go one more time to say ‘goodbye’ to our Romanian friends, to handover to their Priest Fr. Petre and to take one final gift of aid for the poor before their harsh winter.

The many lovely, often hand-made, souvenirs I have collected over the years will be offered free at a special Coffee morning. Donations will be gratefully received and taken to Barcanesti by Audrey. PLEASE SUPPORT US

METHODIST HALL, Lympstone TUESDAY JULY 7th. 10 to 11.30 a.m. Photos and information will be on display too.

 LYMPSTONE POLICE REPORT

Since my last report I have been made aware of several incidents of vehicles being subjected to petty vandalism.  This includes a flour type substance being chucked over vehicles parked in Underhill and Greenhill Avenue.  Although there is no permanent damage to the vehicles, it is however extremely annoying for the owners.  I am also aware of a badge being removed from a vehicle parked on School Hill.  If anyone has any information or has seen anybody acting is an anti social manner, please contact me on the numbers below.

We have had two incidents of bike thefts in the village, which took place on the 19th May at different locations.  I would recommend everyone leaves their bikes properly secured and I will hopefully look at doing another bike property marking event in the future.

On the 20th May between 0730 and 0830 a burglary took place in Quay lane in which an amount of property was taken.  If anyone has any information regarding this theft, please call the police quoting KE/09/1376

On the 23rd May between 7.15 and 9.50 an attempted burglary took place at a property in the rural area of Lympstone.  The offender was unsuccessful in entering the property and left the scene.  Positive enquiries are continuing.

We have recently become aware of a new scam involving a male with a foreign accent telephoning people and telling the homeowner that he works for BT.  He then goes on to say that they have an outstanding bill and unless they pay immediately he will cut them off.  He then requests they hand over bank details and personal details.  Throughout the call the male is intimidating and bullies the homeowner to hand over details.  This is a scam and is not connected in anyway to BT.  I would never recommend giving out bank or personal details over the phone.  If you want to check that a call is legitimate, replace the handset and ring the company using a number out of a phone book.  If in any doubt – DO NOT hand over any details.  Can I ask families or friends to check and gently remind elderly residents of the above, as unfortunately they are often the victims of these types of scams.  If you receive a call from this male, please contact the police quoting OPERATION BUSBY.

SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR LYMPSTONE SOUTH WEST TELECOMS BAND

The Lympstone South West Telecoms Band had a successful weekend competing in the First Section at the Ebbw Vale Contest on Saturday 16 May 2009 and in the Open Section at Weston Super Mare on Sunday 17 May 2009.

Both contests were own choice, whereby the Bands can pick their own piece to perform and the Band played ‘An Epic Symphony’ by Percy Fletcher. This proved to be a good choice as the Band won the First Section at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre, beating the band in second place by a clear 3 points. Not only did the band win the Mark Constance Trophy and £200 pounds for coming first in the Section but our Principal Cornet, Sarah Gray and Paul Luford the bands Soprano Cornet player both won trophies for the best Soloists on their respective instruments.

The Band travelled down to the Winter Gardens Pavilion on Sunday and performed in the Open Section, where Bands from the First and Championships Sections compete against each other. The Band were placed seventh out of eleven Bands but even though not as good a placing as the day before, it was a pleasing result against far tougher competition.

The weekend was enjoyed by the whole Band, who are looking forward to competing next year, to not only defend their title in Ebbw Vale but to try and get into the Prizes at Weston.

EXCITING START FOR VILLAGE CRICKETERS

A grey evening at Newton Poppleford – scene of big defeats on both visits since the Lympstone club was revived – was not the brightest way to start the new season.  Lympstone won the toss and chose first use of what light was left, only to be a wicket down to the second ball of the match.  Opener Jonno Lee compensated with an undefeated 36 as the drizzle just about held off, and with good support from Robin Tolson and Ben Ingham, the villagers amassed a respectable 124–9 from their 20 overs.

As dusk turned to night the home side made a hesitant start against the bowling of Moyle boys Josh and Jack.  A mid order burst put Poppleford back into the chase and with three overs and five wickets left they needed only 27.  An over to go and the target was 10 - bowler Ben Ingham being handed the task of containment.  With only three runs from his first four balls, the villagers’ victory seemed back in the bag, but the penultimate ball was dabbed gently for an all run 4, whilst the Lympstone players hunted for it in the darkness.  The home team tried it again from the last ball of the match, but this time our fielders found it in time and it was victory to the visitors by a single run.

PARISH CHURCH

On Saturday 27th June the Diocese of Exeter is celebrating its 1100th anniversary.  There will be an open air eucharist at 11.30 am with the Archbishop of Canterbury as preacher.  Lunch will be available on the cathedral green followed by a variety of entertainment from 2 until 5 (there is a special children’s event in the Bishop’s Palace Garden at 2.30 £1 in advance and £4 on the day).  Archbishop Rowan Williams will take part in the ‘Songs of praise’ with Judy Spires at 5.15 pm.  Rounding off the day is the big band sound of AJ’s ‘Back in the Mood’ from 7.15 to 8.45 also on the cathedral green.  These events on the green are free!  It should be a day to remember.

John Clapham’s farewell took place in a packed Woodbury Village Hall.  Many thanks are due to everyone who contributed.

Family Service Family Service will be on Sunday 28th at 4 pm with Geoffrey Wrayford, so we will not clash with Clarefest on the 21st and then on 19th July.

Geoffrey Hackston.  Sadly we have to report that Geoff Hackston passed away peacefully on 28th May.  It is with sadness as his service to the church over two decades will be missed, but with joy as he was confident in his faith and knew that death was a passage into the presence of God.

Geoff retired from teaching to Lympstone with Jean in 1987 and straightaway got involved in the life of the parish.  Soon after he came he became treasurer of the church and later churchwarden for several years.  He was one of the servers and trained others in this role.  He sought to work in the background but was well able to do readings and intercessions during services.

Everyone in the village will continue to benefit from his interest in ornithology as he wrote the section on the birds of the estuary in ‘The Lympstone Story’.

Coffee morning this month will be on Tuesday 30th from 10 ‘til 12.  For details and all services in church see the notice board under the railway arch.

Sea Sunday service for this year takes place on the slipway on 12th July at 11.30 am.

The popular Produce Stall will open on Saturday 11th July for ten weeks.

A quintessentially English pair was how our speaker, Bernard Lockett, described Gilbert & Sullivan.  Gilbert was a barrister but he hated the law and could not resist poking fun of it. How apt the words in some of the Gilbert & Sullivan pieces are today, proved when Mr Lockett played extracts from Trial by Jury and Pirates of Penzance!  The pair were brought together by Richard D'Oyly Carte and were the forerunners of musical theatre.  Their popularity continues today, even in Japan, with the Mikado being the most performed piece of musical theatre in the world. Sullivan travelled extensively in Europe and developed a taste for fun music.  He was also as popular with Queen Victoria as he was with the public.
