FLOWER AND VEG SHOW

The 62nd Annual Flower and Vegetable Show held on Saturday 23rd August was the most Amazing Event!     “Grow for the Show” read Keith Exelby`s banner and you certainly did!     We had more entries than ever before with something for every age group to enjoy and admire.     Well over 400 people came through the door to admire the fabulous displays of home and allotment grown produce as well as all the homemade cakes (including some with a topical Olympic theme), jams, chutneys, handicrafts, and beautiful flower arrangements.     During the afternoon sumptuous teas were served in a real Garden Party atmosphere in an attractive flower filled area outside the hall.    The weather was kind and this unique village event, where so many of us gather together to enjoy one another`s gardening efforts and hobbies, was declared “The Best Show Ever”.

 POLICE

First of all I hope you have all survived the dreadful weather and enjoyed the summer break.

I am aware that there was some concern regarding the behaviour of some individuals during the Furry Dance and the police presence that was required due to the problems that occurred.  The actual Furry dance was a complete success and a very enjoyable experience, unfortunately what followed on into the evening slightly marred the event.  However co-operation with the public houses and the police led to a safe conclusion and nobody was injured.  The Committee and Police along with the Public houses will the working closely to ensure that this event continues to run successfully in the future and a meeting will be taking place shortly to discuss.

On the 29th August between the hours of 1700 and 2300 the swing in the play area in Candys Field was damaged.  The damage caused to this swing is going to cost around £300 to repair and the swing will be out of action until further notice. If anyone witnessed the damage or has any information, please get in touch quoting KE/08/2633. A lot of residents in Lympstone work hard to provide these excellent facilities for the children and it is a shame that it is ruined by a few individuals.

And finally, once again can I remind people not to park on Station Road Hill and block the access to the garages.  This is unfair to the occupants who have paid /rented them.  I am in discussion with Network Rail regarding appropriate signage and ticketing the offenders.

SUMMER FUN

Lyps members have had a great summer of activity with junior clubs meeting every Wednesday morning for the 7 - 11 yr olds.

The senior club went on trips to Crealy, ten pin bowling, the beach trip ended up at the swimming pool due to the rain, and trips to Woodlands and quad-biking were very lucky with the weather. Very many thanks to the parent volunteers who helped with transport and went on the trips.

The summer was rounded off by a very successful joint enterprise with the Lympstone Film Society. A two day film making course was the highlight of the summer for many of the participants and the fruits of their labour will be shown on Friday 12th September.  Many thanks to the Film Society for their time and effort in making it such and enjoyable and successful workshop.

Junior Lyps will be held on Friday 12th September 5 - 6.45pm and all 7 -11 yr olds are welcome.  Senior Lyps is every Friday 6.30 - 8pm and 11 - 14 are welcome.

THE EMPERORS NEW CLOTHES

Once upon a time the Emperor wanted some new clothes, on hearing this Lesley went to him to show him the exquisite diamond encrusted garments she had just made.  On the way she stopped off to see Mary at the village shop, she couldn't see them, then she had a pint at the Globe and showed  the upside down goldfish, he couldn't see them.  Then she went to  the Post Office to get them weighed so she could post them, but she couldn't see them either.  Undeterred Lesley made her way to the Emperor, he of course being a man who knows everything (and what man doesn't?) could most certainly see the fine clothes and put them on straight away.

Not one to miss a chance Lesley picked up all the Emperors old clothes and brought them back to Lympstone where she is going to sell these high quality articles.  So if you want to grab a bargain and raise money for Hospiscare come to the Function Room at the Village Hall on Saturday 4th October, 2 - 4pm for a Nearly New Sale where you will be able to find the Emperors clothes plus much more, there will be ladies clothes size 8 - 20 plus, men’s clothing and some children's

THE EXE ESTUARY NEEDS YOU!

Below are some forthcoming volunteer events offering you the opportunity to get involved with the practical management of the estuary.  They are a great opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills, and get some exercise in a beautiful environment while giving something back to the estuary.

Saturday 20th September is our Autumn Exe Estuary Clean Up.  We will be taking to the sand banks of the Exmouth Local Nature Reserve from 4pm in order to clear some of the litter and waste that not only has detrimental effects on wildlife but devalues this beautiful site; impacting on tourism and the local economy.  The clean up will run from 4pm till 6.30pm followed by a free cruise courtesy of Stuart Line, with a light buffet on board.  Sunday 21st September will see the continuation of the clean up with an event at Dawlish Warren from 10 am till 3pm followed by a celebratory buffet at the Dawlish Warren visitor centre.  For more call the Rangers on 01626 863980.

Volunteers attending either of the clean up events will be entered in to a free prize draw, prizes include 2 tickets to the Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, £50 restaurant voucher (both courtesy of South West Water) or a family ticket on any First Great Western day trip in Devon or Cornwall (complements of FGW)

Sunday 28th September habitat management with the RSPB from 10am till 3.30.

LYMPSTONE COMPOST

Its time for the autumn compost/mulch orders and this year a reduction in cost!   Order six bags of compost or mulch for only £5 from 1st October until stocks run out or 5th November whichever is the earlier. For smaller orders the cost will be £1 per bag.  We hope that this offer will encourage sales as it is essential for us to sell as much compost/mulch as possible to ensure the survival of Lympstone Compost.   All residents of the village are eligible to purchase compost - delivery is free within the parish.

Thanks to our compost one local resident grew some very long, prize winning parsnips exhibited at the recent Flower & Vegetable show.

LEADING STRING QUARTET TO PLAY HERE

In the newly published programme for our Autumn Season, Lympstone Entertainments is proud to highlight a concert by one of the country’s leading chamber groups, THE BRIDGE STRING QUARTET OF LONDON.

“Since Lympstone Entertainments started up a couple of years ago” says co-founder John Welton, “we have been eager to bring a top string ensemble to perform in the village.  So naturally we are very excited to have persuaded what one national critic called ‘the superb Bridge Quartet’ to open our new season.”

Named in memory of composer and teacher Frank Bridge, who taught and inspired Benjamin Britten, the Quartet are hailed for their recordings, particularly of the complete quartets by their namesake. The Lympstone programme will include his Quartet No. 2, as well as Schubert’s Quartet in E flat and Mendelssohn’s Quartet in D, Opus 44 No. 1.   In addition to concerts, The Bridge String Quartet also give workshops and masterclasses both in Britain and abroad.

The Bridge String Quartet concert takes place in the Parish Church, by kind permission of the Rector, starting at 7.30pm on Sunday 27th September. Tickets can be bought at Lympstone Post Office, price £10 or at the doors, which open at 7pm.  Come early for the best seats – remember, the pews are now cushioned!

LYMPSTONE CRICKET CLUB MATCH REPORTS

26th June saw the popular annual game against the Harefield XI at St Peter's School thrill a large and enthusiastic crowd.  Batting first, the opposition posted a challenging 153 for 7, with villager Charlie Lenygon scoring a mighty 54.  Toby Ingham was the in form bowler for Lympstone, conceding only six runs off three pacey overs, with David Hall, John Goss Custard and Ed Maltby also in the wickets.  To the soundtrack of the village band, Lympstone could only reach 121 in reply, with highlights including a brutal 34 clubbed to all corners of the ground by John Brewer (including 28 in boundaries), and 31 not out by Chris Cooke, who at one stage had a line of nine slip fielders behind him.

Licking our wounds after the Harefield game, Lympstone took on the University of Exeter Erratics on 10th July at Woodbury.  With two evenly matched sides, the game was eventually tied with both sides scoring 114.  David Wright struck with the ball on his debut and energetic fielding combined with sharp work by wicketkeeper Tim Gittins saw three opposition batsmen run out.  In the Lympstone innings Ben Ingham and Jonno Lee scored freely with the bat while opener John Morris anchored the batting performance with a technician’s 28.

A 40-over Sunday game on 3rd August against Argyll Road at Woodbury was abandoned in monsoon conditions after 24 invigorating overs.  This was unlucky: bowling first, Lympstone were in a commanding position, with opening bowler Ben Ingham swinging the ball wickedly and provoking a flurry of wickets, while the game also saw the Paul Downes spin attack bought out of retirement.

The Sunsets were the opposition for a 20-over game on 15th August, when a brief respite in the weather witnessed a splendid match that ended with the club's second tied game of the season.  Bowling tightly and accurately, Lympstone limited the opposition to a total of 91, with Charlie Lenygon in the wickets and pacemen Charles Morris, Ben and Toby Ingham and Paul Jordan making scoring difficult for the opposition.  On a stunning debut opener Jamie Cooke (26 not out) led the way, with contributions by Jonno Lee and Ollie Creighton laying a strong foundation for the Lympstone Innings.  Solid accumulative batting from Ben Ingham and Charles Morris saw Lympstone close in, seemingly inexorably, on the total, although a subsequent tail-end collapse saw us thwarted.  With a single run tantalisingly needed to win off the last delivery, stumps were shattered and the villagers were left thinking what might have been....

PARISH CHURCH

Anyone passing the church recently will have noticed building work by the entrance, the South door.  This is to provide disabled access and has needed additional steps for those approaching from the road.  The ‘stepless’ route is to enter from by the war memorial.    While there is building work entry into church is by walking this route to the tower, across the back of the tower and into the little door which leads through the flower arrangers’ cupboard!

We will have to use this way in again soon when the Serle memorial tablet, in the porch,  is repaired.  This project is being funded by the Friends of Lympstone Parish Church.  We would like to thank everyone who supports the friends and it’s good to know how your money is being spent.

The Harvest Festival will be held during the first weekend in October.  Harvest Supper on Saturday 4th and service on Sunday 5th.  The produce will be distributed within the village, to the Open Door Project in Exmouth and the St Petrock’s in Exeter.

Under the railway arch is the church notice board which gives information about services and events such as the monthly coffee morning [30 Sept]  This, as are all church events, is open to everyone; also the Family Service held at 4pm on the second Sunday of the month.[14 Sept, 12 Oct] with the worship band.

The Sunday School restarted in September and welcomes families to come and join in the service.  Children leave church after the first hymn and return towards the end of the service, usually, to give a short presentation of what they have been doing.  The adults do not report to the children, just give them a clap!
