THE BRITISH LEGION 2008 POPPY APPEAL On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 2005 Simon and I stood at the Menin Gate in Ypres to hear the Last Post sound over Flanders Fields. We were there almost by chance, but it was a moment that was to change our lives forever. On our return to UK we joined the British Legion, Simon trained as a voluntary caseworker and I was given the opportunity to take over from Merle Wheeler – to whom we owe a huge debt of thanks - and became the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Lympstone. House to house collections this year start on 25th October. Lympstone has built an enviable reputation over the years for its generosity, partly because of our strong ties with the Royal Marines but also because of the community spirit for which we are almost legendary. So I would ask that, when you hear a knock on the door and you find one of our intrepid volunteers standing there, please remember those who have served us in the past and who continue to serve us to this day. Give generously. And to anyone out there who would like to join the team, it only means a few hours work. We have a lot of fun and the rewards are tremendous. Call me on 267858. Shirley Friend

Mary Blair 265586 SHANTYMEN RETURN FROM WORLD TOUR Exmouth Shanty Men will be making fast, as close to the Globe as they can, on the afternoon of Sunday 21st September. Once inside they will tell tall tales of their World Tour of Sidmouth and Germany, drink Liam’s finest ales and dream of better weather. At 4pm they will perform their acoustic live show – singing their hearts out to a heady concoction of lusty deck songs and heartbreaking ballads, spiced with larks and a degree of tomfoolery. The lads will appear in character, in period dress and almost in control not only of their faculties. Villagers are warned that they may well be enlisted into the jiggery or even the pokery of this motley marauding crew. Tony Day LYMPSTONE COURSES WITH THE WEA Courses

GOOD WEDDING COLLECTION Our wedding reception was held at the Sailing Club on Saturday 12th July 2008, it was a wonderful day and we would like to 'Thank' everyone who assisted and supported us throughout. We are delighted to report that a sum of £525 was raised for CLIC on the day and thank all our guests for their contributions. Jeff and Jo Bundy WI "Your Eyes and You" - an important subject started our Autumn programme. A superb speaker, Mr Frederick McShaw, an optometrist from Sidmouth, had our eyes focused on him from the beginning. Having given us his background, he invited questions the whole way through his hour's educational talk. Subjects discussed covered the importance of regular eye checks to detect conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, macular degeneration and many others. His practice had received two national awards and it was clear to see why! He was thanked by Miss Ruth Wilson. The President, Jo Cotton, thanked members for their help with the Summer Supper and the Furry Dance, both of which made a welcome profit. The Drama Group's topical contribution to the former was much appreciated. Diary dates:

We were welcomed at the Village Hall by the Chairman of the Parish Council and Cllr. Jane Moffatt. The Village Hall was set out with displays from the majority of the organisations in the Parish and we were invited to tour the displays and ask appropriate questions of the representatives. The range of organisations and activities was extensive and covered the complete age range. It would appear that if there was enough interest in an activity an organisation or group either was present or would be formed. The provision for young people was very good and included Toddler Group, Preschool Group and an active Youth Club with approximately 120 members with weekly meetings for the older members. Communications through the magazine appeared to be excellent and there was a very good parish web page. It is hoped that the long term future of both these is secured with a greater community involvement. On the environmental side there was a very active Allotment Association who owned their own allotments and a village composting scheme. Following the presentations we undertook a conducted tour of the village which included the Village Hall, the play area and the Youth Club. We then visited the Sea Scouts Hut and the Football field before moving on to the Sailing Club area and Methodist Church. The village shop and Post Office both appeared to be very well supported and a vital part of village life. The railway station appeared to be well used and had just been adopted by a group of local volunteers. In light of their geographical closeness to Exmouth the number of organisations is exceptional. With a continued progression towards togetherness the future of Lympstone looks positive.” (And we still did not win! Ed) LYMPSTONE STATION You may have heard that our lovely planters and one of the hanging baskets at the Exmouth end of the Station was vandalised. Anyone see anything of this? We are not going to be put off by this and intend to replace everything and keep the station looking pretty during the winter, so if anyone has any spare plants (like perennials that could stay in the planters all year) or a basket to donate we would be very grateful – also if anyone has any tubs or large plant pots that could be planted up by the Garden Club to add to those already there? We do want to keep Lympstone Station looking attractive and welcoming. Shirley Wilkes |
