Fabulous fast and festive food for Christmas

Come and join me on Saturday 29th November from 3-5pm (venue the Village Hall Function Room) to help raise money for the NSPCC at a really fun cookery demonstration using the Pampered Chef products and utensils. There will be the opportunity to test them out and more importantly taste the results! There is no obligation to buy, but anything bought on the day is guaranteed to arrive in plenty of time for Christmas (so you can do all your Christmas shopping in one afternoon!) and 15% of all sales will go to the NSPCC.

Tickets at just £2 include a glass of mulled wine (or a nice cup of tea!) and a mince pie. They are available from the Post Office or Becks Pearson on 264988. Thank you for your support.

WI

Our Secretary, Diana Budgen, took the meeting and introduced Mr Raymond Budd who gave us a nostalgic afternoon.  A Cornishman by birth, he soon found that he and his twin brother were blessed with good voices and after serving in the War and, encouraged by his father, he auditioned with George Mitchell to become one of his singers.  He was offered a summer season at Blackpool where he met many famous people, and joined the Black and White Minstrels, performing two shows a day, six days a week in London for a number of years.  Throughout his talk Mr Budd told funny jokes and sung, both accompanied and unaccompanied, some of the famous traditional American minstrel and country songs in a light tenor voice.  He explained how the blackface make-up was applied and the way in which the lavish costumes were kept free of the "black".  He briefly outlined the many successes of the TV series which ran for over 20 years.  After questions he was thanked by Diana Winterforde-Young.

It was announced Devon WIs had raised almost £5,000 this year in Pennies for Friendship for the Associated Country Women of the World.

Due to the School now using the Village Hall until 2.30, we cannot have access until then so in future meetings will start as soon as possible after that time.  Members were reminded that cakes, produce, books and helpers were needed for our Coffee Morning at the Methodist Hall on Saturday, 11 October at 10.30am.  The Drama Group's next rehearsal will be on Monday, 13 October at the Youth Club hut.  New committee members will be needed next month - please think about putting your name forward at theAGM on 5 November.  No names mean no WI as several people are retiring!

Amenities report

A review of the Action List and a review of our Ground Maintenance Contracts (which are up for renewal in the New Year) were the main agenda items at our last meeting.

Highlights from the Action List:

 1.                  We have suspended our order for new benches while we make a claim for a number of good quality benches from the closure of Rolle College.

2.                  Work on the second surface water drainage project that we are pursuing has started at Pretty Corner, we are aware of the disruption caused but again ask for your understanding while this essential work is completed.

3.                  The Flood Planning meeting has been postponed because we won’t be ready. We hope to be in a better position to proceed in the New Year when all the plans and support should be in place to implement the scheme.

Review of Ground Maintenance Contracts:

There were a number of amendments to the existing contacts to ensure all required work forms part of the main contracts. Two key elements that will be of interest are:

1.                  We will try a much more radical cut of the hedge on The Rag so that no matter how vigorously it grows during the bird nesting season you will still have view over the estuary.

2.                  We have included the entrances to Highcliffe Close and Underhill Crescent within the contract and DCC have agreed to offset our additional costs against those that they would have paid their own contractor.

Personal note:

As readers of The Herald know I shall be leaving the council and the village at the end of the month, but not alone! myself and Gill are off to Southern Spain to live and work with our family who own businesses in Gibraltar; initially for six months and see how it goes? We would both like to thank you for all your support and good wishes; I would like to thank you for giving me an opportunity to serve you as a councillor, which I have really enjoyed.

 LYMPSTONE VILLAGE HALL

The ring barked copper beech tree has had to be removed at a cost of £500. It will be replaced by two beech saplings.

New taps have been fitted in the toilets and kitchen. The taps in the toilets are of ‘press’ type, those in the disabled toilet and at other wash basins are lever type. With new isolator valves and other work this cost £773.

The annual emergency electrical safety light inspection, the fire safety inspection and the gas safety audit has taken place successfully and remedial work has been completed.

A permanent boiler has been installed in the kitchen at a cost of £911. It takes only a few minutes to heat up and is capable of producing 150 cups of tea per hour. If you use the boiler please remember to turn it off when you have finished.

An almost new industrial microwave oven has been provided for the kitchen thanks to the kindness of Michael Richardson. This is a very efficient 1800 watt machine, so please be careful when you first use it. As a rule of thumb use a quarter of the settings you are used to with a household machine.

The Film Society has completed installation of the electric screen and new sound system. The sound system has 3 speakers to cover all staging permutations, and an extra mobile speaker which can be used in the Ancillary rooms. To use the Sound System, please make prior contact with Brian Mather (278594). The Village Hall, Players and Lympstone Entertainments made contributions to the cost.

The Players have received new flats and rostra. The storage of these necessitated throwing out a lot of accumulated junk and generally overhauling storage. Thanks to all who helped.

Facilities have been placed in the Committee Room to enable the Parish Council meetings to have a pause for tea, coffee, or soft drinks.

The annual Charity Commission return has been made. The average age of Trustees is 64 years!

Our next significant expenditure is on a refrigerator for the bar.

The future of heating, which is proving prohibitively expensive, is under review.

The purchase of new tables is under investigation

The Management Committee is being restructured.

Our current balance at 22 September is £21,313, down £1,325 on the balance at 14 July. Income since 14 July is £3,827: expenditure £4,524.
